The South China Sea Islands which are about 164.74 k㎡, are made up of the East Sand Islands, the West Sand Islands, the Middle Sand Islands, the South Sand Islands and the Yellow Rock Island.

The South China Sea Islands lie in the place where the shipping ways meet between the Pacific and the Indian oceans. And they are very important to not only for transportation but also for national defense(国防). Long ago, their first islanders, the ancestors (祖先) of the Chinese people began to live there and started building buildings so China has always had full sovereignty (主权) over the area. The PLA told the world that the islands are part of province of Hainan Island.

The South China Sea Islands have rich natural resources and sea products on the islands and under their nearby seafloor, such as oil, gas, fish, animals and sea plants as food.
